Cuerda Seca Tiles
We have a limited number of special embossed cuerda seca tiles!
This amazing method of creating tiles was created in Persia in the 1400’s and then used in Spain, where it gained great popularity. The name Cuerda Seca means dry cord in Spanish and is a means of making colourful tiles without the colours running and ruining the design of the tile. This is achieved by the use of the special separation substance that keeps each coloured glaze from mixing with the others, allowing for the creation of an often intricate pattern. Originally the separation substance used was a type of grease, but it is now more often a wax resistant product. Once the outline of the pattern is drawn on the tile using this substance, the coloured glazes are applied to the tile, often by using tubes of glaze with fine tips. The tiles are then fired and left to dry.
These decorative intricately handmade tiles are popularly used as features for anywhere in the home – indoors and outdoors. They can be used alone but are also used with other similar designs for interest.
